Islam encourages activities that promote health and well-being, as long as they do not conflict with religious principles.

PILATES is permissible for Muslims as a form of physical exercise, provided it is conducted within Islamic guidelines, the Federal Territory Mufti Department clarified in response to a question.

Responding to a public query on the hukm (ruling) of pilates for Muslims due to its similarities with yoga, it stated that Pilates is allowed as long as it is carried out in a closed environment and does not involve free mixing between men and women.

The clarification described pilates as a structured exercise focused on stretching, controlled movements and breathing techniques aimed at improving strength, balance and overall body function.

Originally developed in the 20th century by German athlete Joseph Pilates, the exercise is known for its benefits, including strengthening muscles, improving posture, relieving back pain, enhancing focus and supporting weight management.

The mufti emphasised that Islam encourages activities that promote health and well-being, as long as they do not conflict with religious principles.

However, Muslims are advised to remain cautious of any form of exercise that may include elements such as rituals, chants or practices that contradict Islamic teachings.

The ruling also highlighted the importance of safeguarding modesty and maintaining proper boundaries, particularly in fitness settings.

“Any activity that brings benefit to the body is permissible, as long as it does not involve elements that are contrary to syariah,” the statement said.

It added that Muslims should be mindful in choosing exercise routines and environments to ensure their practices remain in line with Islamic values.

The mufti concluded that physical fitness is encouraged in Islam, but must always be balanced with the preservation of faith and adherence to religious guidelines.
