SHAH ALAM - Women who become victims of financial abuse after the breakdown of a marriage are advised to be courageous in cutting ties with their former partners as an important step towards rebuilding their lives and achieving greater stability.
Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris counselling psychologist Associate Professor Dr Fauziah Mohd Saad said women must understand that what they are experiencing is a form of prolonged trauma and not a personal weakness.
"To stay strong, they need to rebuild emotional and psychological boundaries with their ex-partners, including having the courage to cut off unnecessary contact," she said.
She added that social support from family, friends and the wider community plays a crucial role in strengthening resilience.
Dr Fauziah said professional intervention such as counselling is also vital in helping women process trauma, rebuild self-esteem and learn more effective stress management strategies.
"The main focus is to regain control of one’s life. They need to move out of the role of a victim and become individuals who are empowered and have a clear direction in life," she said.
