Fatal crash at SMK Tanjong Mas: Teacher to be charged

The 57-year-old suspect was released on police bail today after the two-day remand period expired.

KOTA BHARU - A 57-year-old female teacher suspected of knocking down two students, killing one of them in front of the surau of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tanjong Mas here, on Sunday, will be charged soon.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the 57-year-old suspect was released on police bail today after the two-day remand period expired.

"The suspect will be charged in court soon after the investigation is completed in accordance with Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

"The police have also finished recording the teacher's statement," he said in a press conference after the Monthly Assembly at Kelantan contingent headquarters here today.

According to him, if convicted, the driver can be sentenced to between five and 10 years in prison and a fine of RM20,000 to RM50,000, as well as disqualification from driving.

In the incident at 1.50 pm, the victim Nur Fatimatul Hawa Mohd Azaudin, 13, was confirmed dead at the scene after it was believed that she was hit by a vehicle driven by the female teacher.

Kota Bharu district police chief ACP Mohd Azmir Damiri was reported to have said that initial investigations found that the driver of the car was believed to have accidentally pressed the accelerator before skidding and crashing into the victims.

The incident also resulted in another student being seriously injured and is being treated at Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital here. - BERNAMA
