Head of US immigration agency ICE steps down

Todd Lyons will step down at the end of May, his boss, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, said in a post on X.

WASHINGTON - The acting director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the agency tasked with carrying out President Donald Trump's mass deportation campaign against migrants, has resigned, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

Todd Lyons will step down at the end of May, his boss, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, said in a post on X.

Mullin described Lyons as a "great leader of ICE," adding: "We wish him luck on his next opportunity in the private sector. His last day is May 31, 2026."

No reason for Lyons' resignation was publicly given.

Trump appointed Lyons to the post in March 2025. Lyons had previously spent around 20 years with ICE.

The agency has faced a chorus of criticism over enforcement operations in US cities including Chicago and Minneapolis, where masked federal agents were deployed against migrants. - BERNAMA
