SHAH ALAM: Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has criticised the Selangor government for not taking the necessary measures to counter the state’s flooding problem.
“I have advised umpteen times that the matter be solved immediately.
“I have advised the state government to refer to experts from foreign countries, especially the Netherlands, to get the best ideas in overcoming the flooding problem in Selangor,” Sultan Sharafuddin said in his royal address at the opening of the Fourth Session of the 15th Selangor State Legislative Assembly yesterday.
His Royal Highness added that the advice had not been heeded and taken seriously and was akin to “mencurah air ke daun keladi” (pouring water on a yam leaf, meaning wasted advice).
“I was made to understand there was allocation from the state budget to overcome the flooding problem every year, but no effective results can be seen to date,” said Sultan Sharafuddin.
The Ruler added that floods are still occurring in several locations, especially in residential areas across the state, inconveniencing people.
“Today, I once again advise my government to mainly focus on overcoming the flood problem as well as have short-, medium- and long-term plans and action for immediate implementation,” Sultan Sharafuddin said.
The Ruler also called for the Klang River to be cleaned up so the people can enjoy a clean source of water for drinking and daily needs.
“I will not tire of continuing to order action to be taken until the flooding and clean water supply problem is resolved and ends once and for all,” said Sultan Sharafuddin.
The Ruler also stressed that the Selangor government should be wary of factories that do not manage waste responsibly, as this can contribute to river pollution.
His Royal Highness reiterated that strict action should be taken, especially against factories operating without permission.
“I wish to also raise the issue of cleanliness involving garbage collection services, which appear not to be effectively managed by the Selangor government,” said Sultan Sharafuddin.
Regarding pig farming, the Ruler said that some quarters are dissatisfied and have refused to comply with his decree prohibiting pig farming in Selangor.
“I have given reasons why pig farming is unsuitable in Selangor, including due to insufficient land and pig farms being located in densely populated areas with Muslim communities.
“River and air pollution issues are also factors making pig farming inappropriate in Selangor,” said Sultan Sharafuddin.
The Ruler added that this is the reason why he had suggested that pork be imported, particularly from Sarawak, to supply the non-Muslim communities in the state. - THE STAR
