BERLIN - The pilot of a small aircraft was killed when the plane crashed shortly after take-off in the district of the northern city of Oldenburg in Germany, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

The aircraft went down near the Hatten airfield on Tuesday evening and crashed on open ground. The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.

Police and Germany's Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation are probing the incident. The aircraft was destroyed in the crash and firefighters extinguished a subsequent fire.

The pilot, aged around 71, was reportedly on his return flight to Switzerland, where he lived, according to police.

The aircraft's emergency parachute system was not deployed, and its activation charge was later safely detonated by federal police specialists.
