SHAH ALAM - The Malaysian arts industry is in mourning following the passing of veteran entertainer Jalil Hamid, who died in his sleep at his residence in Taman Alam Megah, Seksyen 28, today. He was 69.
His daughter, Afiqah Jalil, confirmed that her father breathed his last at about 12.30pm.
She said that the actor, who had a history of heart complications, had woken up for Subuh prayers earlier in the morning before returning to bed.
Family members found him unresponsive when they attempted to wake him at noon.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil described the late Abdul Jalil Abdul Hamid as a unique entertainer whose distinct style and talent made him a "jewel" of the national arts scene.
"Everything he contributed through his service and dedication will always be remembered," Fahmi said in a tribute on Monday, extending his condolences to the family of the artist whose career spanned over four decades.
Born in 1957, Jalil was a multi-faceted talent who established himself as an actor, singer, comedian, director, producer and host after entering the industry in 1984.
Throughout his career, he contributed to more than 30 films, 70 telefilms and 25 songs, including the iconic satirical singles Ayam and Raya.
His screen prowess earned him critical acclaim, including the Best Supporting Actor award at the 13th Malaysia Film Festival for Baginda (1997).
He later won Best Actor at the 2018 Telenovela Awards for his poignant performance in Bisik Pada Langit.
Fellow veteran actress Seniwati Fauziah Ahmad Daud, popularly known as Ogy, remembered him as a versatile performer who "educated in silence" through his honesty and commitment to the craft.
"He was very professional and disliked troubling others. The industry has lost someone who was not only great on screen but also a person of noble character," she said.
Beyond his professional life, Jalil was known for his quiet philanthropy.
Karangkraf Special Tasks Senior Manager Hashim Anang recalled how the actor frequently visited the Karangkraf Mall to purchase dozens of copies of the al-Quran to be gifted to villagers in Masai, Johor.
