KUALA LUMPUR – What began as a casual challenge turned into a winning moment for a Kuala Lumpur physics teacher, who outsmarted nine contestants to emerge champion of Sinar Daily’s Smartlympics Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan (ASWARA) edition.
For 31-year-old Saiful Azlan Saiful Annuar, the victory came with more than bragging rights, he walked away with the grand prize, the coveted Hollyland Lark M2S wireless microphone system, a gadget widely favoured by content creators, streamers and mobile journalists for its compact build and crisp audio quality.
But beyond the prize, it was the thrill of thinking on his feet that made the experience memorable.
“I just wanted to challenge myself and have fun. The questions were really intense because you only have seconds to think and answer.
“As a teacher, I’m used to problem-solving, but this was a completely different kind of pressure,” Saiful said after his win on Saturday.
Held in a high-energy format, Smartlympics saw 10 contestants battle it out in rapid-fire one-on-one duels lasting just five seconds for each question.
The competition unfolded across four rounds, with surprise topics revealed only when contestants stepped onto the stage. Participants also had to answer entirely in English, adding another layer of challenge to the already fast-paced game.
Correct answers were rewarded with the ring of a bell, while wrong responses triggered a buzzer, keeping the tension alive throughout each face-off.
Contestants could continue guessing against the clock or pass to move on to the next clue. The first participant to run out of time was eliminated, while the winner stayed on stage to face the next challenger.
However, the format also allowed eliminated contestants a shot at redemption in later rounds, unless they had already secured a win earlier in the competition.
This special ASWARA edition placed a spotlight on arts, culture, heritage and Malaysian traditions, reflecting the institution’s identity as the nation’s premier arts and cultural academy.
Sinar Daily Editor Nurzuhairah Tasnim Lokman presented the grand prize to Saiful during the event.
The competition also drew support from several sponsors, adding a distinctly Malaysian touch to the occasion.
Jasmine Food Corporation sponsored rice and coconut milk prizes for participants, ingredients synonymous with local favourites such as nasi lemak, often regarded as Malaysia’s ultimate comfort food.
Meanwhile, TikTok Shop contributed additional prizes including hats, phone stands and socks for contestants and winners throughout the event.
