THE school holidays are here and whether you are a parent looking to keep the kids occupied or a family seeking a much-needed break, Malaysia has no shortage of options.
Here are some ideas to make the most of the time off.
Head to the library - it is more fun than you think Pustaka Raja Tun Uda in Shah Alam is running a Mini Carnival School Holiday Programme throughout the break and it is one of the better-value options around. Activities on offer include 3D jigsaw puzzles, clay painting, a cooking session making egg mayo sandwiches and a Fun Game with Clown session, most priced between RM4 and RM5 per child, with some activities free.
A general knowledge quiz is also open to all at no charge. All programmes run on a walk-in basis, with registration opening daily. Parents should bring a spare set of clothes for younger children.
Visit a theme park Malaysia is home to some of Southeast Asia's best theme parks.
Sunway Lagoon in Petaling Jaya offers thrills across its water and amusement parks, while Legoland and Hello Kitty Town in Johor Bahru are perennial favourites for younger children. For something different, Lost World of Tambun in Ipoh combines a water park with a hot spring and night park.
Explore the great outdoors
Take the family out of the city and into nature. Taman Negara in Pahang, one of the world's oldest rainforests, offers jungle trekking, canopy walks and river cruises. Closer to the city, Kepong Botanic Gardens is an accessible option for a morning walk and some fresh air. The Cameron Highlands remain a favourite for a cool retreat, with strawberry farms, tea plantations and night markets to explore.
Hit the beach
School holidays are the perfect time to head to the coast. Perhentian Island and Redang in Terengganu are popular for snorkelling and diving, while Langkawi offers a mix of beaches, cable car rides and duty-free shopping. On the east coast, Port Dickson is a quick getaway for families in the Klang Valley.
Visit a museum or science centre
For something educational yet engaging, Petrosains at KLCC is a hands-on science discovery centre that children tend to love. The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia, Royal Malaysian Police Museum and the National Museum in Kuala Lumpur are also worth a visit for older children. Planetarium Negara offers star-gazing sessions and interactive exhibits on space exploration.
Catch a movie or a show
With school holidays comes a wave of family-friendly releases at the cinema. Check local listings for the latest animated or adventure films. Alternatively, look out for live performances, children's theatre and cultural shows at venues such as Istana Budaya and Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC).
Try something creative
Enrol the kids in a short holiday workshop - many art studios, cooking schools and craft centres offer holiday programmes. Baking classes, pottery sessions and painting workshops are widely available in major cities and are a great way to keep children engaged while picking up a new skill.
Volunteer as a family
The holidays are also a good time to instil values of compassion and community in younger children. Look for family-friendly volunteering opportunities at animal shelters, food banks or community clean-up drives in your area.
