Clarifying the situation, Azhar said the interaction took place after he had delivered a lecture and was heading to the dining hall, where he was introduced to the student.

“In a friendly atmosphere, I shook his hand and touched his cheek as a gesture of warmth, considering my relationship with his family. There was no slapping, physical assault, or any form of rough behaviour as alleged,” he said.

He added that the moment occurred in an open setting and was witnessed by multiple parties, including officers from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Student Affairs Department, staff members and programme participants.

Azhar said the controversy stemmed from a video clip that did not capture the full context of the interaction.

“I regret that a video recording which does not present the full context of the incident has created a misleading perception and tarnished my reputation,” he said.

He also urged the public to avoid spreading unverified claims.

“I urge all parties to verify the actual facts and refrain from spreading unfounded allegations. I also reserve all my legal rights against any party that publishes or disseminates false statements that damage my reputation,” he added.

Previously, it was reported that Nik Alif Aiman Abdul Ariffahmi, the grandson of former Kelantan Menteri Besar, the late Tan Sri Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, alleged that he was slapped by the senator while attending “Program Pemerkasaan Bangsa 2.0” at Institut Latihan Memperkasa Ummah (Ilmu), Janda Baik on May 20.

Following the incident, a video clip of the encounter began circulating widely on social media, prompting public discussion and scrutiny over the context of the interaction.
