Johor’s justification of seeking a fresh mandate to ensure political stability raised questions.

MELAKA – Melaka Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) is urging Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh to be transparent with the public regarding the timing and rationale behind any dissolution of the Melaka State Legislative Assembly (DUN).

Melaka AMK chief Hakimin Mokhtar said the dissolution of the Johor State Legislative Assembly, which took effect on June 1, should serve as a point of attention for Melaka residents as it could become a model for a similar move in the state.

He said Johor’s justification of seeking a fresh mandate to ensure political stability raised questions, given that the state assembly's term was only due to end in April 2027.

“There is no crisis and no collapse of the government. It is merely a timing cycle that benefits BN.

“This clearly exposes that the early dissolution is a tactical manoeuvre rather than a move made in the interest of public service,” he said on Wednesday.

He said the Melaka state administration's term was scheduled to end on Nov 30, 2026, with the Melaka state election expected to be held within the next six months.

“If BN Melaka follows the same model, Melaka voters will also face an election where the timing and strategy are determined by BN, rather than by the actual needs of the people,” he said.

Hakimin added that the country was expected to face five major elections within the next 18 months, which could affect public spending and divert attention from economic priorities.

“Every time elections are held separately and according to party interests, the cost is borne by taxpayers, focus on the economy is disrupted and the people are repeatedly exploited as ‘mandate validators’ in a process that has effectively been controlled before the curtain is raised.

“Therefore, Melaka AMK urges the Chief Minister to explain to the people the timing and actual reasons behind any dissolution of the Melaka State Legislative Assembly,” he said.
