Rohingya man remanded three days over fatal motorcycle crash

A Rohingya man has been remanded for three days in connection with a road accident that claimed the life of a motorcyclist at Kilometre 12.5 of Jalan Kuala Terengganu-Kuantan near Rusila, Marang, on May 27.

The remand order was issued by Magistrate Noor Mazrinie Mahmood from today until June 5 to facilitate investigations under Section 41(1) for reckless or dangerous driving causing death.

If found guilty, the 20-year-old suspect faces a prison sentence of between five and 10 years, a fine of RM20,000 to RM50,000, and disqualification from holding a driving licence for at least five years.

Marang district police chief Supt Mohd Sofian Redzuan said a 27-year-old motorcyclist riding a Yamaha RXZ from Kuala Terengganu towards Rusila was killed in the 6 pm incident.

He said the victim sustained severe head and leg injuries and was taken to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) for further treatment.

"The case was initially investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving, but has since been reclassified.
