GEORGETOWN - Collaboration between Malaysia and Australia in the healthcare sector is creating new opportunities to improve access to advanced cancer treatment through modern diagnostic tools and precision medicine.
It is also strengthening Malaysia’s position as a regional medical hub.
Asean Icon group chief executive officer Serena Wee said access to cancer treatment goes beyond cost considerations, involving accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment options and timely access to necessary medication.
She explained that advances in oncology technology now allow doctors to tailor treatments more precisely to individual patient needs, improving both treatment outcomes and quality of life.
“Accurate diagnosis at an early stage is very important because it helps doctors determine the most suitable treatment for the patient.
“With developments in technology such as genomic testing and precision medicine, not all cancer patients require chemotherapy as some can be treated using hormone therapy or other treatments that are more suitable for their condition,” she said.
Serena made the remarks during a media visit organised by the Australian High Commission at Island Hospital by Icon Group.
She added that Icon Group, an Australia-based organisation, works closely with pharmaceutical companies to introduce patient access programmes aimed at reducing the financial burden of cancer treatment.
These initiatives, she said, help more patients access innovative medicines at more affordable costs.
“Cancer treatment should not be limited to major urban centres, but expanded to reach communities across the country.
“In line with our mission to bring treatment closer to patients, we are always evaluating opportunities to expand to other areas in Malaysia,” she mentioned.
She added that expanding services to East Malaysia would significantly improve access to specialised cancer care for patients in Sabah and Sarawak, reducing the need for long-distance travel.
Beyond clinical developments, Malaysia’s healthcare sector continues to attract international investment, supported by a strong ecosystem, skilled workforce and growing medical tourism industry.
Icon Group, an Australian oncology provider, currently operates in Malaysia through facilities in Penang and Kuala Lumpur, delivering specialist cancer treatment services.
In Penang, Icon operates within Island Hospital, supporting growing regional medical tourism demand, with a significant proportion of patients coming from Indonesia.
The facility has expanded in response to increasing patient volumes, reflecting sustained demand for oncology services in the region.
Icon integrates Australian clinical practices into Malaysian healthcare settings, supporting standardisation and specialist care delivery.
Its presence in both Penang and Kuala Lumpur reflects long-term sector development rather than a single-entry expansion, reinforcing Malaysia’s role as a regional cancer treatment destination.
