SHAH ALAM – If your morning office meeting was interrupted by a tail swishing across the conference table or your desk chair was mysteriously occupied by a furry colleague demanding snacks, congratulations — you are celebrating Take Your Cat to Work Day exactly as intended.

Observed every third Monday of June, Take Your Cat to Work Day (TYCTWDay) marks the beginning of Take Your Pet to Work Week, a light-hearted annual event that encourages pet lovers to bring their feline companions into the workplace while promoting cat adoption and animal welfare.

For one day, the traditional workplace hierarchy gets a little fuzzy. Managers become treat dispensers, meeting rooms gain unexpected attendees and productivity is measured in purrs per hour.

The idea behind the event is simple: cats make wonderful companions, and the day serves as a reminder that thousands of cats in shelters and rescue centres are still waiting for forever homes.

Of course, before your cat starts inspecting office supplies or supervising the pantry, there are a few important considerations.

First, not every workplace is suitable for a feline visitor. Employers and co-workers should be consulted beforehand, particularly as cat allergies are relatively common. A workplace that welcomes one person’s beloved Persian may not be comfortable for another person’s sinuses.

Then comes the more important question: does your cat actually want to attend?

Unlike dogs, who often treat every outing as a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, cats can be more selective. Some felines happily explore new surroundings and charm strangers. Others consider moving three metres away from their favourite sofa an act of betrayal.

Cat owners know their pets best. If a cat becomes stressed during travel, dislikes carriers or struggles with unfamiliar environments, a home-based celebration may be the better option.

For those bringing their feline friends to work, preparation is key. Pet Sitters International recommend bringing familiar comforts such as a favourite bed, toys, food and water bowls and a portable litter box. Cats should remain safely secured in carriers during transport and should always have access to a quiet place where they can retreat if the office becomes overwhelming.

It’s also important not to force interactions.

Cat enthusiasts have a remarkable ability to detect the presence of a cat within seconds, often appearing from neighbouring departments with treats and baby voices. However, not everyone enjoys unexpected feline encounters. Respecting boundaries, both human and feline, helps ensure the day remains enjoyable for everyone involved.

And for workplaces that are not pet-friendly, all is not lost.

Employees can still participate by sharing photos and videos of their feline companions with colleagues, displaying pictures of their cats at their desks or organising office-friendly fundraising activities for local shelters. After all, most cat owners already have several hundred photos ready to go at a moment’s notice.

Beyond the cuteness overload, the event also carries a meaningful message.

Animal welfare organisations often use the occasion to raise awareness about adoption, responsible pet ownership and support for local shelters and rescue groups. Some workplaces even organise donation drives or invite animal welfare groups to introduce cats that are looking for homes.

In a world where workdays can often feel stressful and deadlines dominate our attention, perhaps there is something refreshing about a reminder from our feline friends.

So be sure to take breaks, take them for short walks and provide snacks.

In other words, maybe cats have been workplace wellness experts all along.

So whether your cat is physically accompanying you to the office today or waiting at home to inspect your work bag when you return, Take Your Cat to Work Day offers the perfect excuse to celebrate the furry companions who make life a little softer, warmer and infinitely more entertaining.

Just don’t expect them to answer emails. Happy Take Your Cat to Work Day!
