Three injured in two-storey room-rental terrace house fire in Bukit Baru

MELAKA - Two individuals suffered burns while another experienced smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at a two-storey terrace house rented out on a room-by-room basis at Jalan Permai 4, Taman Perkota Hang Tuah, Bukit Baru, early today.

In the incident, which occurred at 3.38 am, a 22-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man sustained burns, while a 26-year-old man suffered breathing difficulties due to smoke inhalation.

Three other occupants, a 44-year-old woman and two men, in their 40s, escaped unharmed.

Melaka Fire and Rescue Department Operations assistant director, Deputy Fire Superintendent Mohd Shahrom Laji, said the injured victims were found inside the house and then given early treatment by the Emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS) team at the scene.

"A team from the Ayer Keroh Fire and Rescue Station, assisted by personnel from the Bukit Katil Fire and Rescue Station, was dispatched after receiving an emergency call at 3.38 am.

"Upon arrival at 3.48 am, firefighters found the two-storey permanent structure, measuring approximately 20 by 70 square feet and rented out by room, about 80 per cent destroyed by the fire,” he said.

He said firefighting operations were carried out using first-aid hose lines and the blaze was brought under control at 3.57 am.

A total of 15 personnel, supported by two Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) vehicles and two EMRS units, were involved in the operation.

Mohd Shahrom said monitoring operations are continuing to ensure there are no remaining hotspots or risk of rekindling.

The cause of the fire and the total losses incurred are still under investigation. - BERNAMA
