BEIRUT - One person died of injuries sustained during a stampede by football fans in Amman, following the Jordanian national football team's 2-1 World Cup defeat by Algeria, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

The Interior Ministry in the Jordanian capital said nine people were hospitalised after watching the game on a large screen at a public square in the capital.

One of the casualties passed away shortly after. The others have received treatment and are in stable to moderate condition, the ministry added.

Thousands of Jordanians had gathered at the Hashemite Plaza in central Amman in the early hours of Tuesday to watch the soccer match. World Cup debutant Jordan played Algeria in a Group J match in San Francisco. - BERNAMA-dpa
