KUCHING - A mechanic who crashed through a roadblock and struck a police officer on duty at Jalan Padungan near here last Saturday will face additional charges related to driving under the influence of alcohol.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the investigation into the drink-driving offence is still underway, and police will file the charges under the Road Transport Act as soon as the chemistry report is obtained.
He said on Tuesday, the 29-year-old local man was sentenced to 27 months' jail by the Kuching Court for offences under Section 26(2) of the Police Act 1967, Section 332 of the Penal Code, and Section 186 of the same code.
"The suspect has been charged with several other offences, not just drink-driving. In this incident, he rammed through a roadblock, and we will also prosecute him for breaching the roadblock," he told reporters after the Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters monthly assembly here today.
In the incident during the early hours of June 20, a senior police officer sustained leg injuries after being hit by the local man who crashed through the roadblock at Jalan Padungan.
Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu in a statement said an initial urine screening revealed that the suspect tested positive for amphetamine, methamphetamine, ketamine, and benzodiazepines, in addition to having six prior criminal records. - BERNAMA
