AYER KEROH - Pakatan Harapan's (PH) decision to form the Unity Government with other political blocs, including Barisan Nasional (BN), has paid off despite the challenges of governing through consensus, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The PH chairman and Prime Minister said the decision to build a broader coalition following the 2022 General Election had proven worthwhile.
“Alhamdulillah, in 2022, we were given the mandate. Thus, with the core strength of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), we made a joint decision within a larger coalition.
“We negotiated, and I express my gratitude and appreciation to Barisan Nasional (BN) Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who was determined to join the Unity Government, which continues to receive an overwhelming response from Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and Sarawak Premier Datuk Seri Abang Johari, along with several other major parties.
“Alhamdulillah, it has not been in vain,” he said at the Keadilan National Congress 2026 at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) here on Saturday.
Anwar acknowledged that implementing reforms under the Unity Government was not straightforward, as PKR could not make decisions unilaterally and had to take the views of its coalition partners into account.
“This is not a case where PKR acts as the sole core governing everything. Rather, it is a party that must negotiate.
“When we hold power, everything must be considered, not just by us, but by our partners as well,” he said.
He therefore urged those demanding reforms not to expect changes to be implemented hastily, warning that poorly considered moves could undermine political stability and national security.
“That is why we must not be hasty. We can cross and break down barrier walls, but that does not guarantee political stability and national security.
“So to our friends demanding change, please go ahead, but accept the reality that change has already been implemented,” he said.
