The firefighting operation would involve the department’s aerial unit from Miri if weather conditions permit.

KUCHING - A forest fire at the Samunsan Forest Reserve in Lundu, which entered its second day today, is estimated to have affected an area of about two hectares.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) deputy director Tiong Ling Hii said the firefighting operation would involve the department’s aerial unit from Miri if weather conditions permit.

He said the operation was expected to begin this afternoon to help put out the fire in areas that are difficult for firefighters to access by land.

Meanwhile, JBPM Sarawak said in a statement that among the challenges faced by firefighters was access to the site, which is located about one kilometre from the main road, as well as the lack of water sources and hilly terrain.

"Eleven personnel from the Lundu Fire and Rescue Station have been deployed, along with a Compact Fire Rescue Tender, an Emergency Medical Rescue Services vehicle and a Hilux four-wheel-drive vehicle.

"The operation is also being assisted by nine personnel from the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), and information on the firefighting and monitoring operations will be updated from time to time,” the statement said. - BERNAMA
