KUALA LUMPUR – Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) domestic users are expected to save up to RM47 a month, or nearly 13 per cent, on their October electricity bills following the government’s decision to raise the electricity consumption protection threshold.
The higher threshold means users with monthly electricity consumption of up to 800 kilowatt-hours (kWh) will be exempted from the Automatic Fuel Cost Adjustment (AFA) surcharge, eight per cent sales and service tax (SST), and the RM10 retail charge.
Previously, these protections applied to users consuming up to 600kWh a month.
TNB president and chief executive officer Datuk Ir Ts Shamsul Ahmad said the amount saved would vary depending on each household’s electricity consumption.
“With the expansion of this protection zone, we hope more users will be able to manage their electricity bills and reduce their financial burden.
“A user consuming 601kWh will see their electricity bill fall from RM258.40 to RM225.50, resulting in monthly savings of RM32.90.
“For consumption of 650kWh, the bill will drop from RM280.20 to RM243.90, a saving of RM36.30,” he said.
Shamsul said households consuming 700kWh would pay RM276.85 instead of RM316.75, saving RM39.90 a month.
“For consumption of 750kWh, the bill will fall from RM347.85 to RM304.30, representing savings of RM43.55.
“For the maximum consumption under the new protection category, which is 800kWh, the electricity bill will be reduced from RM375.85 to RM328.60, providing the highest savings of RM47.25 a month,” he said.
He said this during a media briefing on the additional protection mechanism for domestic electricity consumers here on Friday.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government would expand electricity bill protection to domestic users consuming up to 800kWh a month, compared with the previous threshold of 600kWh.
The additional protection applies to electricity consumption from September to Dec 31, 2026.
For September consumption, the reduction in charges will be credited to users’ October electricity bills.
The move is expected to benefit more than eight million, or up to 90 per cent, of TNB’s domestic users, including nearly one million additional users compared with the previous 600kWh protection threshold.
