KUALA LUMPUR – The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have dismantled Geng Suria, an organised crime group believed to be linked to 20 property and violent crime cases, including armed robberies that left victims injured, in Kedah.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M. Kumar said the operation, codenamed Op Sunset, was conducted by the Bukit Aman CID in collaboration with the Kedah contingent CID from Sept 24 to 27 in Kedah and Perak.
He said the group comprised nine members aged between 28 and 52 and was led by a 30-year-old local man. The group was believed to have been active since early 2024.
“Police arrested six suspects aged between 28 and 39, while the other three group members are being held at Sungai Buloh Prison, Pokok Sena Prison and Sungai Petani Prison for other criminal offences,” he said in a statement today.
He said the six suspects were being detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA) until Oct 25.
“Checks found that several suspects had previous criminal records involving vehicle theft, housebreaking, drug offences, gang robberies and causing grievous hurt using sharp weapons.
“Police also seized six mobile phones of various brands and 189 ecstasy pills weighing an estimated 101.12 grammes. An investigation into the drug seizure has been opened under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” he said.
Kumar said the group’s modus operandi was to target homes belonging to foreigners, business premises and residential properties identified by the group leader.
He said members used dangerous weapons, including knives and machetes, during robberies and did not hesitate to injure victims to carry out their crimes.
“Their aggressive and violent actions caused victims to experience fear and trauma, while several victims also sustained serious injuries,” he said.
He added that stolen valuables were sold for money, with the proceeds distributed by the group leader among members based on their respective roles and involvement.
Kumar said police reports received since 2024 indicated that Geng Suria’s activities had caused losses amounting to hundreds of thousands of ringgit, while also compromising victims’ safety.
“The investigation papers were referred to the Serious Crimes Unit of the Attorney-General’s Chambers, and approval was obtained to charge all nine group members under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code for being members of an organised crime group.
“All nine members of Geng Suria are scheduled to be charged tomorrow at the Sungai Petani Sessions Court in Kedah,” he said.
He said PDRM remained committed to taking action against individuals and groups involved in organised crime to safeguard public safety and well-being.
He also urged the public to continue cooperating with the police by providing information to help combat criminal activities. –BERNAMA
