SHAH ALAM - Malaysia is welcoming 600 chess players from 55 countries for the Fide World Amateur Chess Championship 2026, which is taking place from Nov 4 to 13 at KSL Esplanade Hotel, Klang.
The championship, organised by the Selangor State Chess Association under the auspices of the International Chess Federation (Fide) and the Malaysian Chess Federation, brings together 300 international players and 300 local participants.
The opening ceremony was officiated by the Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who welcomed players and delegates to the Royal City of Klang.
In his address, Tengku Amir Shah said the championship provided an opportunity for players from different backgrounds and cultures to come together through their shared passion for chess.
"We come from different backgrounds and cultures, but we are united in our love for this game. I hope this championship will be an opportunity not only to compete, but also to build friendships and enjoy Malaysian hospitality," he said.
He said the championship was particularly meaningful as it allowed amateur players to compete on the international stage and test their abilities against participants from around the world.
"What makes this championship special is the opportunity it gives amateur players to take their place on the world stage.
"For everyone taking part, it is a chance to challenge yourself, learn from others and discover how far you can go," he added.
Tengku Amir Shah also expressed his appreciation to Fide, the Malaysian Chess Federation and the Selangor State Chess Association for bringing the international championship to Klang.
He also acknowledged the contributions of officials, volunteers and supporters in making the event possible.
The championship features six official categories, with Open and Women's competitions divided into three rating groups: Under-1700, Under-2000 and Under-2300.
The categories are governed by Fide rating caps, with participants required to meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the official competition regulations.
Beyond the competition, the event also aims to promote Malaysia as a destination for international sporting events and strengthen the country's sports tourism sector.
Tourism Selangor serves as the official tourism board for the championship, with support from Tourism Malaysia, the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), the Selangor state government and the Youth and Sports Ministry.
The championship is held in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia 2026/2027 and Visit Selangor 2026 campaigns to showcase Malaysia's hospitality, culture and tourist attractions to the international chess community.
Key Term Holidays is the official travel partner for the event.
