SHAH ALAM - Malaysia could see daily cases of Covid-19 reach upwards of 60,000 cases per day in the near future, according to a public health expert.

Based on current da, positive cases in the county went back to five figures on Sunday (Feb 6) with more than 10,000 infections and had even increased to 11,304 the next day.

The explosion of Covid-19 cases is expected by health experts since the spread of the more contagious Omicron variant.

University Malaya Tropical Infectious Diseases Research and Education Centre Director Professor Dr Sazaly Abu Bakar said the country needs to be prepared for a massive spike in Covid-19 cases in the near future.

“The figure of 10,000 cases are just reported cases and it is expected that there are many undetected positive cases as what happened to every country due to the Omicron wave. This variant has been around for a long time but we are only affected by it as of now.

“Malaysia must be prepared for the sudden increase in cases that will definitely happen in the next two weeks. We expect the number of cases to increase from 20,000 to 50,000 to 60,000 in the near future,” he told Sinar Daily.

Dr Sazaly said, although the number of new cases is now on a rise, what needs to be given attention to is the number of Covid-19 patients in the Intensive Care Unit and those in the category of four and five which are still under control so far.
