LAHAD DATU - A man was sentenced to six months jail by the magistrate's court, today, for making up a story that a group of armed foreign men clad in soldier uniforms had infiltrated into Long Patau, Tambisan, here.

Magistrate Ryan Sagiran Rayner handed down the sentence on the 42-year old after the latter pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 182 of the Penal Code.

The court also ordered for the man to be referred to the Immigration Department upon completing his jail term.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Lim Sze Chuen.

Meanwhile, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Idris Abdullah said the suspect was arrested by the police after providing false information with intent to cause panic among the public.

“The public is encouraged to channel information to any enforcement agency, especially the police.

“However, each information must be provided with a sense of responsibility as false information can spark public concern, including the authorities,” he said in a statement.
