TENOM - The prosecution against celebrity preacher Ebit Lew was done after the police conducted thorough investigations.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Abd Jalil Hassan said the police have considered various aspects in the investigation including the possibility that the 38-year old preacher was defamed.

“We investigated all angles including slander. However, at the end of the investigation, we managed to collect evidence resulting to the action taken against him today (Friday),” he said in a press conference at the Tenom district police headquarters, on Friday.

He said the prosecution against Ebit proceeded based on the outcome of the investigations and clear evidence.

Abd Jalil confirmed that Ebit was charged at the magistrate’s court in Tenom, with 11 counts under Section 509 of the Penal Code.

“The charges were for sending obscene pictures and words via WhatsApp with intent to insult the modesty of a woman between March and June, last year,” he said.

He also advised members of the public to not make any provocation or speculation on the case to ensure the court process runs smoothly.

“Let the law deal with the matter justly on those who were charged and those who have lodged complaints. We leave it to the court to decide over the case,” he added.
