MACC is not investigating Zeti's husband

PUTRAJAYA - The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is not investigating the husband of former Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz, Datuk Tawfiq Atman, on allegations related to the 1Malaysia Development (1MDB) scandal.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the commission was only given the responsibility to recover 1MDB funds from Singapore.

However, he said Tawfiq was under police investigation.

“In the investigation involving the 1MDB case, the task force involving the police and MACC (has been established).

“For (the case of) Tawfiq, the task given to the MACC is to recover money (1MDB) from Singapore.

“The police (who) are investigating (Tawfiq). I think their investigation paper is underway (in the process), the police will submit the investigation paper to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) when it is ready," he said at a press conference at the MACC headquarters today.

Earlier, the media reported that former Goldman Sachs bank official, Tim Leissner, during the trial proceedings linked to 1MDB in New York, USA claimed that the husband of the former BNM Governor accepted bribes.

However, Tawfiq through a statement via the law firm of Messrs. Jagjit, Ariff & Co recently asserted that he had never accepted bribes in his life and did not even know Leissner.
