BATU PAHAT - The free WiFi and Internet initiative, the first in Malaysia to use the Television White Space (TVWS) technology launched today proves the government’s commitment in providing internet usage comfort for Keluarga Malaysia.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad said the project was implemented as part of the corporate social responsibility initiatives of UiTM Holdings and its strategic partners.

"The technology, developed by UiTM Holdings and its strategic partners will benefit students and residents in rural areas who need high-speed internet access for daily activities such as PdPR (home-based teaching and learning), businesses and the development of Internet-of-Things (IoT).

"By offering free WiFi and Internet using the TVWS technology in selected localities, the National Digital Network (Jendela) plan can be implemented more quickly,” she said at the launch of the initiative, here today.

The Seri Suling Industrial Park in Parit Sulong has been selected as the first location for the TVWS project.

The TVWS technology uses available UHF and UVF television waves that are not used by broadcasting companies to be utilised as high-speed internet infrastructure.

Noraini said, such an initiative would provide internet coverage in rural areas without incurring large costs, compared to other internet existing infrastructures. - BERNAMA
