SHAH ALAM - Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, 43 is the new Johor Menteri Besar, this comes a day after intense speculation that the BN poster boy Datuk Hasni Mohammad will not be appointed to the seat.

The Machap assemblyman was sworn in at about 3.30 pm today.

A vehicle was spotted entering the back of Istana Bukit Serene at 1.47pm.

Onn Hafiz, the grandson of former prime minister Hussein Onn, was sworn in by the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar at the Istana Bukit Serene in Johor Bahru.

Onn Hafiz is also the great-grandson of Umno founding fathers Datuk Seri Onn Jaafar, who served as seventh Menteri Besar of Johor from 1947 to 1950, and nephew to Umno veteran Hishamuddin Hussein's nephew.

Also present during the swearing in ceremony was Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.

The 43-year-old Umno man won the Machap seat with a 6,543 majority in Saturday’s state elections. He served as the executive councillor for youth, sports and tourism in the previous BN-led state government.

Speculations have been rife that Onn Hafiz was the preferred choice of the Palace.

He is a second-term assemblyman having made his debut in the Layang-Layang seat in the last general election (GE14) in May 2018.
