KUALA LUMPUR - Following BN's landslide win in the Johor state election, Wanita Umno have called for the party to chart their own path heading into the general election.

Feeling euphoric and confident, speaking to Sinar Daily, several of Wanita Umno delegates who attended the party's annual general assembly today have argued that Umno should not depend on other parties to ensure its win in the coming general election.

One of the delegates from Wanita Umno, Halimahtun Abdul Rahim said she believed that Umno is better off without component parties.

“We can rebuild a stronger party image if we strike solo. We will not be able to do so if we have to work together with parties whose goals do not align with ours,” she explained.

However, Halimahtun did not elaborate whether this includes MCA and MIC, who are also the component parties in BN alongside Umno.

Referring to Umno Deputy President Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan’s speech yesterday on placing the Youth wing at the forefront of the upcoming general election (GE15), Halimahtun said that all Umno wings should have equal importance.

This is because Wanita Umno is often said to be the biggest contributor to Umno's win in elections.

A Puteri Umno delegate is also ecstatic about the recent big win in Johor, where BN obtained a two-thirds majority, 40 out of 56 seats.

Nur Syuhada Sidek told Sinar Daily that this is a sign that Umno and BN will win should a GE15 be held this year.

“I believe that these wins are foreshadowing our bright future. I think it is a good idea that talks of GE15 are more resounding now.

“I am all for Pemuda (Youth Wing) being at the forefront of Umno if it means more wins,” she said.

Kota Melaka Umno division Wanita chief, Nur Farhana Abdul Ghani shared that today’s speeches will continue to raise the spirits of Umno delegates in preparation for GE15.

"Having younger candidates as representatives in the coming election is all well and good, but experienced members of the party should balance out the inexperience of the youth,'' she said.
