KUALA LUMPUR - Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki says that the party is "ashamed" to share the same bed with “political traitors” who betrayed the people’s mandate.

In his opening speech at the Umno Youth assembly today (March 17), he said that the Youth wing was strongly against a backdoor government, although he did not name any parties specifically.

“Who is really crazy about power? Suspending Parliament and depriving the country of democracy until state money is spent without limitation, to the point where the country's debt has risen to RM173.3 billion in just 18 months of being in power.

“It is not enough that the RM5 billion from the Tabung Kumpulan Wang Amanah Negara (KWAN) had been squandered in the name of check and balance, in the name of emergency,” he said.

Prior to the current administration under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Umno cooperated with Pas and Bersatu to form the PN government, which was led under Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The Umno Youth chief also alleged that the peak of the previous government’s corruption is when they went behind the King’s back and claimed that he had consented to end the state of emergency without the need to bring up the matter in Parliament.

Asyraf then portrayed that the instability brought by these parties has led to the lack of confidence among foreign investors towards Malaysia.

He also mentioned in his speech how PH polemised all of BN’s projects, which could have furthered the country’s economic development.

With this in mind, Umno Youth proposes three transformation agendas towards institution reformation in order to stabilise the political landscape of the country.

Firstly, Asyraf stated that the role of the public prosecutor must be separated from the Attorney General to ensure the independence of the role.

Second, the party wing also called for the Anti-Hopping law to be tabled and passed as soon as possible to reassure the people that their votes are not taken for granted.

Lastly, Umno Youth demanded that the government immediately table the Political Funding Act.

Through this law, all party financial resources can be reported transparently so the people will be aware should there be even an ounce of corruption or abuse of power said Asyraf.

“There are zero compromises where the people’s mandate is concerned, hence why Umno Youth will pledge to you now that we shall do our best to carry out comprehensive political reforms for the betterment of the country,” he said.
