SHAH ALAM - Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik says he will announce "within this week" if he is contesting at the PKR polls in May.

“I will be making an announcement within this week. Just wait and see,” he told Sinar Daily.

He added as of now PKR is focusing on recruiting more members to boost membership.

“I think, if PKR wants to remain relevant, we need to have more members and strengthen our machinery at the ground level,” he said, this comes as general elections are speculated this year.

Maszlee, the former education minister said internal party polls would see members jostling for power but in the end "we come back together".

PKR vice president Rafizi Ramli and party leader Datuk Saifuddin Nasution have announced intentions for the party's number 2 post, while other wing members campaign to woo members to vote for them. This has raised fears of further cracks within the party as it stays afloat after almost being wiped out in Melaka and Johor polls.

However, Maszlee said the current political situations within PKR seem to be healthier than in 2018 when it was riddled with internal fractions.

“At the moment, I could see healthy competition among party members and party leaders. I believe that this situation is far healthier than what it was in 2018,” he added.

When asked if there is any ‘wow’ factor within PKR to woo the voters, Maszlee said he believed party members should work hard to recruit more new members, especially youths to strengthen the party.
