KUALA LUMPUR - Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called on for "peace and stability" in the party as the country gears up toward 15th General Elections (GE15).

He said he would not be able to bear witness if Umno splits, this comes after the party today approved constitutional amendments to allow internal polls to be held within 6 months after general elections.

"In the Melaka and Johor state elections, we offered stability and prosperity of the state and the well-being of the people.

"If our own party is not in peace, how can we offer stability to the people?

"Remember, we are not willing to see our party split, a split will only hurt Umno." he said during his speech at the Umno extraordinary general assembly (EGM) at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur today.

Zahid said Umno has undergone various party constitution amendments to suit the present situation.

"It is also done to curb internal problems which can have an impact on the party as a whole," he said.

Moreover, Zahid said Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) had accepted defeat and acknowledged people's decision without any chaos in the last general election.

"I would like to emphasise that Umno does not have the DNA to create chaos. Umno has a track record of developing the country.

"Make the 14th general election a lesson," he said.

Zahid said this in the EGM attended by 2,586 Umno members, along with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, the party's vice-president, who had just arrived from attending Asean-United States Summit in Washington, US.
