Chicken shortage to continue for another week, says wholesaler

Wholesaler and trader from Dusun Tua here, Md Ghadafi Ahmad Harmain, 44, said traders are still facing a severe chicken shortage, adding that chicken prices will increase if the shortage continues beyond next week.
"Last week, I had a problem getting chicken supplies. Usually, I order between 500 to 700 chickens but in the past week, I received only 400 chickens and the situation is expected to continue throughout this week," Ghadafi said.
He urged the government to take the matter seriously.
So far Putrajaya has banned the import of chickens from Malaysia to ensure sufficient supply in the market. The Cabinet has also lifted the approved permit (AP) for chicken, and wheat and directed ministries to list down items where the need for APs could be abolished.
Md Ghadafi added the shortage has seen traders increasing chicken prices from RM10.50 to RM11 per kilogram today.
