Cops to probe 'Walk for Judicial Independence' assembly participants
SHAH ALAM - Police will call up all the individuals including members of the Malaysian Bar who participated in the "Walk for Judicial Independence" assembly this morning to facilitate in investigations.
Dang Wangi district police chief Assistant Commissioner Noor Dellhan Yahaya said the police have opened investigation papers under Section 15 (3) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, and Regulations 6 and 7 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Regulations (Measures Within The Infected Local Areas) (National Recovery Plan) (Transition to Endemic Phase) 2022.
“Based on observation, there were about 220 people comprising members of the Malaysian Bar as well as a few identified and yet-to be identified individuals who have gathered at the assembly while holding up placards and banners saying “Jom Jalan 4 Judicial Independence, Pertahankan Kebebasan Kehakiman (Uphold judicial independence)”.
“Investigation papers have been opened. All the individuals involved in the gathering will be summoned to the district police headquarters to have their statements recorded soon,” he said in a statement, today.
He advised the public to not be involved in any activities that are against the law and that serious action will be taken against those who commit offences.
The assembly which was organised by the Malaysian Bar was held following the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) probe into Court of Appeal judge Datuk Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali over an alleged unexplained wealth in his bank account.
Mohd Nazlan, then a High Court judge, had convicted and sentenced former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on seven counts relating to RM42 million of funds belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd on July 28, 2020.
