Six young scientists to represent M'sia at Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings

SHAH ALAM - Six young scientists are given recognition to represent Malaysia at the 71st Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings in Germany starting from June 26 to July 1.

The meeting was done physically and would also be participated by 600 young scientists from around the world.

The six young scientists elected to represent Malaysia were Dr Enis Nadia Md Yusof from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Dr Goh Choon Fu (USM), Dr Nur Azzalia Kamaruzaman (USM), Dr Oh Wen Da (USM), Dr Sazlinda Kamaruzaman (Universiti Putra Malaysia) and Dr Low May Lee from International Medical University Malaysia (IMU).

Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) president Professor Emerita Datuk Dr Asma Ismail said the country had sent 81 young scientists to take part in the meeting since it was first introduced in 2004.

She said the meeting was the best platform for young scientists including leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) of the country to build a network with international-level scientists.

"Other than meeting with Nobel Prize winners from other disciplines of science, the meeting would also expose them to other role models and introduction to other researches with our young scientists and could lead to them broadening their horizons with scientists in world-class labs," she said in a statement on Sunday.

She added the 71st Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings this year were dedicated to the chemistry field and 35 Nobel Prize winners were expected to attend the meeting and share their research and experience with all participants.

"The nomination of the Malaysian representatives for the Nobel Laureate Meeting was open to all young scientists in public institutions of higher learning and private institutions of higher learning in the country every year ran by ASM, which is the supervisory agency of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI)," she said.

She said a total of 25 nominations were submitted this year, which were filtered by ASM and the final nominees were picked by the Nobel Laureate Meetings members.
