SHAH ALAM - Arau Umno division has urged the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to approve Umno's application to postpone its party elections to next year.

Its division chief Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said his division members are hoping RoS would consider the party's decision.

"We reaffirm our support for party elections to be held after general elections. And we hope RoS will follow," he told Sinar Daily.

Shahidan, the Federal Territories Minister further said the division members want party elections to be held next year or after general elections are held.

The decision was made during a division meeting on Sunday, he said.

RoS is expected to announce its decision on July 16.

The media had previously reported Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan as saying that the party had yet to receive any feedback from the RoS since the notice on the party's constitutional amendment was submitted on May 17.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan was reported to have said yesterday that the party has a “Plan B” as a backup.

“For the time being, Umno will not reveal any details of ‘Plan B’ yet. The party’s supreme council will decide whether to hold the party’s elections before December 29 if the constitutional amendment is not approved by RoS,” he was quoted as saying.

However, he said “Plan B” would be a last resort in the event that its application is rejected.

Umno elections were due on June 30, 2021 as the office bearers’ three-year term expired by then.

In May, 2022, delegates at the party’s extraordinary general meeting unanimously passed several resolutions to amend its constitution, including allowing internal elections to be delayed until after the 15th general election.
