KUALA LUMPUR - The country now has 1,2 million voters between the ages of 18 to 20 years old, deputy law minister Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said.

She said according to statistics from Election Commission (EC), there are 21,113,234 people with 94 percent voters aged 21 years and above.

Mas Ermieyati added EC through the Election Academy (APR) has implemented Voter Education Programme by creating an awareness on the importance of democracy.

"The increase in voters among the younger generation is important for the government to ensure that this group has the knowledge and the right to vote as Malaysians," she said in the Dewan Rakyat.

She said this to a question from Datuk Fasiah Mohd Fakeh (Bersatu-Sabak Bernam) who asked the prime minister to state the number of young voters and steps taken to increase awareness and young voters' understanding of democracy.

Mas Ermieyati added, APR through the cooperation of various parties such as government agencies, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have intensified the implementation of the Voter Education Programme among young people at higher institutions or within the community.
