WASHINGTON - Educational Testing Service (ETS), a global provider of tests - including the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) - told Sputnik that Russian citizens can no longer register to take tests amid the Western sanctions imposed on Russia.

"[T]esting is right now terminated for Russian citizens," an ETS customer support representative told Sputnik on Tuesday. "If you've a Russian citizenship and that's stated on your account, it is sanctioned at this time."

The representative said ETS had received a notice to ban Russian citizens from registering to take tests about a week ago. However, the representative could not explain why the sanctions against Russia became the reason for the ban.

"In order to comply with the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) requirements, we are unable to process your request" - is the message that appears on the ETS website when a person tries to indicate that he or she lives in Russia and wants to register to take the TOEFL test.

The representative said there is no date at present as to when the ban on Russian citizens will be lifted and advised to follow the ETS website for any future announcements.

On March 13, ETS suspended all its tests in Russia and Belarus after Moscow began its special military operation in Ukraine. However, Russian and Belarus citizens could until now register to take a test in any other country where ETS provides its services. - BERNAMA
