Thunderstorms, heavy rain to hit 10 states till 1 am, cautions MetMalaysia

SHAH ALAM - Malaysia Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a bad weather warning for 10 states with thunderstorms and heavy rain expected until 1 am.

The warning is for Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Melaka, Johor, Negeri Sembilan and Sarawak.

In Kedah, folks in Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena and Padang Terap are told be cautious.

As for Perak, residents in Manjung, Perak Tengah, Bagan Datuk, Hilir Perak and Muallim were given similar warning.

Meanwhile, Johor is expected to be hit with thunderstorms at Tangkak, Muar, Pontian and Batu Pahat.

Bad weather is also expected at Kapit and Bintulu in Sarawak and Port Dickson and Rembau in seremban were told to be cautious of the bad weather.

Meteorologist and oceanographer, Datuk Prof Dr Azizan Abu Samah explained on the intensity of rain which is measured in units of milimetre (mm) per hour (mm/hr).

"So if it drizzles, the intensity is about four mm/hour and heavy rain has about 60 mm/hour.

"It is also related to how long the rain will last. If the rain intensity is 20 mm/hour and the rain lasts for say four hours, it will certainly cause flash floods.

"But if the rain intensity of 20 mm/hr only lasts 30 minutes, it's not a problem," he told Sinar Daily.

Due to that, he said an hour of rain with more than 20 mm/hr will cause flash floods.
