Use of electric bicycles, scooters in Banda Hilir tourist hotspots still under study

Melaka Historical City Council (MBMB) Mayor Datuk Zainal Abu said the study would also involve other authorities like the Road Transport Department (RTD), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Public Works Department (JKR) and several non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
"Basically, we agree on the use of electric bicycles and scooters because it is in line with the state government's intention to go green but many aspects need to be taken into account because Melaka is a tourist state and traffic congestions often occur on weekends or during long holiday periods.
"One of the aspects that we need to look at is providing special lanes for the use of electric bicycles and scooters so that they do not get in the way of other vehicles and cause accidents. We also need to look at the distance and width of these special lanes,” he said.
He told reporters this after officiating the MBMB-level Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign in conjunction with the National Day 2022 celebration here today.
He said special standard operating procedures, rules or laws on the use of electric bicycles and scooters would also be formulated with the relevant authorities to guarantee the safety of all road users.
Commenting on alternative routes for such vehicles, Zainal said so far there were "green lanes” for bicycles around Banda Hilir and they were also studying the feasibility of these paths being used by electric bicycles and scooters.
In another development, he said the MBMB had issued notices to owners of commercial premises under its administration to fly the Jalur Gemilang on their respective premises in conjunction with the national month celebrations.
He said although this was not an order or mandatory under the MBMB bylaws, this initiative was one of the ways to help enliven the atmosphere during the national month.
"We also ask owners of commercial premises to ensure the Jalur Gemilang is placed at the right place on their premises and installed according to the stipulated procedures, in addition to the national flag being in good condition and not worn or torn.
"If the flag is worn or torn, we hope owners of these premises will immediately replace it as that will reflect our love for the country,” he said. - BERNAMA
