KUALA LUMPUR - Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has announced today that wearing face masks will no longer be mandatory indoors.

He said the new mandate was effective immediately.

However, he said the use of face masks would only be compulsory when using public transportation, in hospitals and medical institutions as well as for those who were symptomatic and Covid-19 positive.

He said owners of premises such restaurant owners and barbershop owners may decide whether visitors of the premises should wear their face masks or not.

Khairy said although the usage of face masks was now optional, the ministry still strongly encouraged face masks to be worn in crowded places.

He said those who were in the high-risk categories were also recommended to wear face masks.

He said for Malaysia to fully transition to the endemic phase depended on the virus.

"It's possible that new mutations can be more lethal but there are also cases where mutations are not too threatening so it depends on the covid mutations," he said.
