More specialists needed to deal with online sexual victims, says activist group

SHAH ALAM - With online sexual abuse cases on the rise, more specialists are needed to deal with victims and create awareness of the issue, said an activist group.

Kemban Kolektif Access to Justice Consultant Melissa Akhir said there are about a thousand online sexual cases reported that are yet to be probed.

“Sometimes they (victims) try hard but they don’t have enough support,” she said during Sinar Daily's Wacana English Edition called Child Sexual Abuse: The Monsters Among Us.

Melissa was one of the panellists along with Spot Community Project programme manager Alya Maryam and Child and Family lawyer Goh Siu Lin.

The live programme focused on protecting children and the importance of health and sexual reproductive education to better protect themselves.

Commenting further, Akhir said called on more specialists are needed to deal with cases nationwide.

“We don't have enough specialists and sometimes there are no incentives given to them,” she said.

Spot Community Project programme manager Alya Maryam called on parents and teachers to play a prominent role in advocating for children against the subject.

“Spot comes in to fill in the gaps to educate and empower children to remove fear, the stigma of speaking on sexual abuse,” she said.

Alya also touched on staying safe during sexual intercourse, stating there is the importance of respect and making the right decisions.
