SHAH ALAM - A medical practitioner says Covid-19 has raised awareness over the common cold and other complex diseases as more people went on to social media to interact with doctors.

Dr Malar Santhi Santherasegapan said the Covid-19 pandemic has brought many doctors and patients closer online during lockdowns.

“More doctors are appearing on social media, talking to patients to understand them as a whole, not just someone with a health problem,” she said in the ‘Bersama Johan Jaafar’ programme at Karangkraf building.

She further raised concerns about patients from private hospitals to government hospitals.

For example, she said when patients go to a government health clinic, they are referred to a government hospital but when they are at a private hospital, they do not have continuity in that regard.

“It is hard to go from a private hospital to a government hospital," she said, further calling for better cooperation and a referral system between government and private hospitals.

She further suggested that the government offers a private wing at government hospitals to solve the problem.

“There is a group that can afford to go to the private sector and others are more comfortable at a government hospital but there are some who prefer to do check-ups at private hospitals and surgery at public hospitals," she said.
