JOHOR BAHRU - Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) will be building weirs in the Sungai Chat river basin to overcome flash flood issue in the area.

Johor Bahru Mayor Datuk Mohd Noorazam Osman said the effort involved an eight-kilometre stretch of the river from Larkin to Kampung Mohd Amin.

He said MBJB will also upgrade the water pumps from two units to six units at the Sungai Chat pump house.

"Two more water pump units with the capacity of 25kwh per unit would be installed in three areas namely Surau Tambatan, the Malay Village restaurant and Jalan Kampung Mohd Amin.

"The additional construction of the weirs would be at the Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Temenggung Ibrahim and the Tanjung Nakhoda development area.

"MBJB will be cleaning up the trash and wastes at the bottom of the river and will do the digging work," he said.

Noorazam said MBJB was prepared in terms of workforce, equipment and machinery to face the risks of floods happening at the end of the year.

He said MBJB would continue to monitor the flood hotspots in Johor Bahru in facing any possibilities of a flood.

"The heavy rains with the intensity over 100 milimetre (mm) starting from 6.30am to noon on Sunday had caused 12 locations in the city centre to be affected by floods. Among the affected areas were Kampung Mohd Amin, Kolam Ayer Road, Persiaran Abu Bakar Sultan and Nong Chik Road.

"MBJB would continue to monitor these hotspots involving three river basins in Sungai Skudai, Selat Johor and Sungai Tebrau/Plentong.

Among the locations were Taman Tampoi Indah, Kampung Mohd Amin, Jalam Kolam Ayer, Jalan Persiaran Abu Bakar Sultan and Jalan Stulang Darat," he said.
