SHAH ALAM - A day after Malaysia reveals its national poll date, the Sultan of Selangor implores for Muslims in the state to grasp the meaning of today’s Friday prayer sermon which talked about the dangers of corrupt leaders.

In a statement by the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah echoed the message of the sermon which cautioned leaders that their greed for power and wealth will ultimately destroy the people and the country.

“His Majesty would like to stress that leaders who betrays, cheats, and abuses power just to accumulate personal wealth will definitely be hated by the people and condemned by Allah S.W.T for it can destroy an entire nation.

“If the leaders are corrupt, then the nation becomes corrupt, just like the old saying ‘if the water is murky upstream, then it remains murky downstream,’” read the statement.

In today’s Friday sermon -- which is read at every mosque in Selangor -- Muslims were also reminded on the need of building a society of high moral values.

“The Muslim ummah must avoid immoral acts and change to cling firmly upon religious principles and universal ethical values, so that we can altogether build a society of high moral and ethics, hence becoming a nation that is well respected.

“Every leader must remain diligent in abiding and practicing the traits of amaanah, honesty, and ikhlaas just as they were commanded by Allah S.W.T,” read the sermon text.

Yesterday, the Election Commission announced that the 15th Malaysian General Election (GE15) will be held on November 19 whereas the nomination day was set on November 5.
