MELAKA - The Melaka state government has urged that schools which have been gazetted as a temporary relief centre for flood victims are not to be used as a polling centre in the upcoming 15th general election (GE15).

State Education, Technology and Telecommunications Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin said problems might arise if the schools are required for dual purposes at the same time.

"We have appealed to the State Education Department (JPN) to ensure that the Education Ministry and the Election Commission look into this matter and consider this for other states as well.

"If floods do occur on polling day, there will be bigger problems if we need the schools to be turned into a relief centre,” he told reporters at a Barisan Nasional Free Petrol for Motorcyclists programme for Raya Rumput state constituency here today.

Rais, who is also Paya Rumput assemblyman also requested Melaka JPN to monitor the condition of the schools to ensure public safety at all times.

The Election Commission has set Nov 19 for polling, nomination day on Nov 5 and early voting Nov 15. - BERNAMA
