PUTRAJAYA - The National Cancer Institute (IKN) today launches an art gallery in collaboration with Novartis Malaysia to celebrate the courage demonstrated by cancer patients in battling the disease.

Themed 'Senyuman dan Harapan (Smiles and Hopes) IKN director Dr Mohd Anis Haron said Galeri Inspirasi Seni IKN is a platform for cancer patients to share their experience fighting the disease and inspire other patients through the art of colouring.

He said the art gallery was the brainchild of IKN’s medical education association’s former chairman Dr Noraini Ab Rahim who learnt about the colouring therapy adopted by cancer patients to deal with the disease when she was abroad.

"I agree with this approach because I believe there are multiple treatment methods in battling illnesses, art is one of them," he said at the opening ceremony officiated by Budi Penyayang Malaysia Foundation chairman Nori Abdullah here today.

About 10 colouring works created by cancer patients, IKN employees and other artists are on display at the gallery.

Dr Mohd Anis said he hoped that the colouring therapy can help patients to tackle and ‘channel’ their stress and pain.

Meanwhile, Novartis Malaysia and Brunei president Elwakil Mohamed said the collaboration is important to raise awareness about early screening and innovative therapies, especially for breast cancer, that can improve quality of life, adding that he hoped the initiative will encourage patients to undergo screening and seek the right treatment. - BERNAMA
