SHAH ALAM - Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has questioned why there has not been any investigations or action taken against former Attorney-General (AG) Tan Sri Apandi Ali who is alleged to have committed various offences.

He said Apandi's action clearing Datuk Seri Najib Razak of any wrongdoings in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal showed that the former AG was involved in covering it up.

"How could Apandi as the AG simply let Najib off the hook even though nine judges starting from the High Court judge, three Court of Appeal judges and five Federal Court judges all had found Najib guilty.

"Moreover, another High Court judge, Datuk Azimah Omar in her 100-page written judgement on May 23, dismissed Apandi's defamation suit against DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang concluding that Apandi among others was a liar and had failed to carry out his duty as the AG.

"There are also grounds to investigate because he was suspected of abetting and protecting the 1MDB crime and the same judgment had questioned Apandi's determination in covering up the 1MDB scandal and clear Najib's name.

"Apandi rejected the joint legal assistance from the Swiss authorities and the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) even though he was aware that their assistance was necessary for the 1MDB investigations," he said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

The Gerakan Tanah Air sponsor chairman said Azimah also expressed the court's disgust at how despicable Apandi's contradictory, evasive and fraudulent statements were.

Dr Mahathir said following Azimah's judgement, many police reports were lodged against Apandi even though there were no actions taken.

"Instead, Apandi was given millions of ringgit in compensation by the government because his service was terminated as a reult of his failure to carry out his duties.

"Aside from receiving compensation, Apandi who had been found by the High Court as a fraud and needed to be investigated because he was suspected of abetment in the 1MDB scandal was appointed to be the head of the Pulau Batu Puteh investigation committee," he said.

Commenting on the investigation on former AG Tan Sri Tommy Thomas' book titled "My Story: Justice in the Wilderness", Mahathir said he has no objections on the investigation.

"If there is a basis on accusations made against him, or anyone including me, there is the law to determine the next course of action," he said.
