SHAH ALAM - Former National Film Development Corporation chief executive officer Ahmad Idham says Communication Ministry must consider educational background and industrial achievement before appointing Finas board members.

He also expressed his views over a controversial statement made by one of the Finas board members, Datuk A. Aida recently favouring looks in comparison to talent.

"The first is if she said so on behalf of her production house, I have no issues with it. It’s up to her because it’s her own company.

"She sets her own business module or strategy which is considered completely independent and private."

"But if she made the statement under Finas board of director, I think that is inappropriate because as a board member, you need to look at certain issues in a broad perspective instead of focusing on two small matters (looks and talent) in order to elevate the industry to another level, which is in line with the role of Finas in the development of the creative industry," he added.

"Or perhaps, the board members appointment was not done properly with careful selection to identify truly capable individuals for the post instead of those who would make a statement that could potentially taint the image of Finas and the ministry," he said.

In regards to talent and look, he opined that what somebody in the shoes of Finas' board member should say is, "How they can play their role and contribute to enhance the talent development programme in our country through Finas' initiatives so that we can enhance the talent and also all the sectors involved in the talent development programme to make our talents more compatible at international level."

The former actor, director and producer further said there is a need to develop skills of actors.

Engage with international scouters so that local talent will be exposed on attending auditions held at international level, he added.

While he did think that looks certainly had an important role but it was not the only criterion that determined a good or talented actor.

"There are lots of other areas for us to look into such as their talent, body gesture and emotions.

"So if you have the look, but you cannot enhance the emotion of a certain character, what’s the point, right?" he questioned rhetorically.
