Non-bumiputeras students continue to face unfair policies despite higher grades, says expert

Institute of Southeast Asia Studies (ISEAS) Senior Fellow Dr Lee Hwok Aun said merit-based policies often becomes contentious where certain races in Malaysia don't see the opportunity that they deserve.
"In Malaysia, the non-bumiputera facing unfair decisions in not succeding into universities despite having greater grades.
"In this case, people have to go both sides by listening to non-bumiputera's issues with empathy," he said.
Lee said this during Sinar Daily's Wacana English Edition programme entitled "Mission Impossible : Breakdown of Race and Politics" on Monday.
Commenting further, he said policies should be identified and recognised.
"The policies should be recognised (reviewed) again not just about bumiputera policies, because these are polices where other groups are also been targetted, so identify the beneficaries," he said.
Apart from this, Lee also said that there are many other important issues such as job opportunities, housing issues and riising cost of living.
